Today is the two year anniversary of me taking over the helm at Leoni's. With any business, you never stop learning and you never stop growing. Over the two years we've seen plenty of change... Some wonderful staff have moved on - to be be replaced by new wonderful staff, we launched a new website, we maintained our 5star food hygiene rating, we have established our bistro evenings which have been a real success, we've ran latte art, barista courses and coffee tasting seminars. I've jumped out of a plane for charity. Customers have become acquaintances and then become friends. We've tried hard to keep our standards up and build on the successful reputation that the business built in the 25 years before my tenure. It's given us tears and laughs, sleep deprivation and a few more grey hairs, but we turn up everyday because we love what we do. None of it is possible without our customers, so this is one huge thank you to your continued support, especially in tough financial times for everyone. And another huge thank you to my staff. Happy birthday to one of our most beloved and respected customers. Mike Woodger.... 100 years young today. Michael Woodger (born 28 March 1923) is a pioneering English computer scientist. He was influential in the development of the early Pilot ACE computer, working with Alan Turing, and later the design and documentation of programming languages such as ALGOL 60 and Ada. He was based at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) located in Teddington, London, for most of his career. This chap is an absolute legend.... He is one the most interesting people I know, and without a doubt the most intelligent. Something a little different from us.... Everyday we are baking all our usual cakes and scones. We love doing it and it is such an important part of what makes us 'us'... Let's talk about 'man's best friend' at Leoni's. It has often been a criticism of us by some people that we don't allow dogs, in fact, of the small number of negative online reviews we've received, most of them are that we don't accept dogs. I have never liked the phrase, "dog friendly". By not allowing dogs, it implies that we are not friendly toward them. In fact, the exact opposite is true. This is my dog, Ronnie..... and most of my staff have dogs.... We love dogs. Unfortunately due to the dimensions of the shop it is simply not practical to accept them, the place is just too small. We obviously won't discriminate against breeds.... I don't think it's fair to simply allow small dogs, but not large dogs.... Who decides which is big and which is small.... And what about 'medium' sized dogs??? It's far easier to just say 'no dogs'. I understand that dogs, and pets in general are part of the family, but by not allowing them, this is not personal, just practical. In any business, it is impossible to please everyone, and you have to be thick skinned when faced with criticism and negatively towards decisions you make which you believe are in the best interests of your business. I usually, 'keep my powder dry' and refuse to comment or get drawn into an argument, but after a particularly unpleasant incident today I just want to make our policy clear. We will quite happily (and often do so) point you in the direction of one of the other fabulous independent cafes in the town who do allow dogs. This will be a long one, but I would really appreciate it if you read until the end. This is a shameless shout-out to all my wonderful customers..... People who know me reasonably well know that I have two fears..... I actually have lots of fears..... But I have two of those extreme fears which turn your blood to ice, your legs to jelly, gives you cold sweats and make your heart beat so fast it feels like it's going to explode...... Sharks and heights..... Even though I'm pretty sure there are no sharks off the coast of Scarborough.... I still can't paddle in the sea..... And standing on a chair to change a lightbulb makes me dizzy and queasy. So in a win/win situation, I've decided to do a parachute jump for charity..... I win by facing my fears, and obviously the chosen charity benefits from the donation..... Of course I'll be filming it and putting over social media..... Surely watching me cry like a baby and wet myself at 10,000 feet is worth a donation? The charity I will be raising money for is CLAPA - Cleft Lip And Palate Association. www.clapa.com Cleft lip and palate is a condition very close to my heart, my daughter having been born with both. 1 in 700 children are born in the UK with either a cleft lip, palate or both. Surgery is always necessary usually within the first few months of being born. Depending on the severity of the condition, multiple surgeries can be needed and frequently also bone grafts. This is just the start however. After surgeries, children often require speech therapy, rhinoplasty, jaw realignment, teeth implants, ongoing orthodontic treatment.... Not to mention the emotional and psychological trauma that the children endure. As an adult I would struggle to deal with all this, so it must be exceptionally hard for children to cope...... Followers of this account will know that for a while now I have been writing and posting an inspirational quote each day on our story. What started out as a bit of fun has gained so much momentum. I get so many comments and reposts and it is so humbling that so many people either find inspiration, humour or even just escapism for 30 seconds from their day by reading them. Because of the volume of interaction that I get from from them, I have decided to set up another account @lifebyleonis and I would encourage anybody who reads and enjoys these quotes to follow this account. ** JULY BISTRO CANCELLED ** It is with huge regret that we will have to cancel this month's bistro evening. The ongoing saga with our refrigeration is causing us so many problems. We have managed to limp through the week, and hopefully the problem is now fixed, although I have said this twice this week already, only for the fridge to fail again. We will obviously reschedule ASAP. My sincere apologies to everyone who had booked.

**** Customer notice **** Unfortunately over this weekend our main fridge has failed. I went in this morning hoping for some sort of miracle, but as you can see..... 16 degrees.... Because of this, we obviously can't use the fridge, which causes all sorts of problems, not to mention the frustrations of a significant amount of wasted stock. In light of this, it is impossible for us to store and serve anything from this fridge until it is fixed. It is with huge regret and disappointment that we will be unable to offer a main food menu until we have rectified this. We will endeavour to offer as much as we can. Obviously a full drinks menu, cakes, teacakes, scones, toast etc and whatever hot food we can do safely within our chilled storage capacity still available. We thank everyone in advance for your understanding.

Due to the obvious warning about the hot weather in the coming few days, we have decided that on Monday and Tuesday next week we will be offering only a limited menu and closing at the slightly earlier time of three o'clock. This is not a decision that we have taken lightly, but nor is the health or welfare of our wonderful staff. Anyone who has ever worked in catering will appreciate the extreme temperatures that can occur in a kitchen during service, especially one as small and compact as ours. With ovens, grills, fridges and freezers all operating, the temperature inside will far exceed the 38 degrees plus being warned about by the weather forecasts. We will be serving all our coffees and teas and obviously cold drinks as usual. We will have a fully stocked cake counter and will be serving light snacks such as toast, teacakes and scones throughout the day. During lunch service our menu will be limited to mainly cold options such as sandwiches and salads. We will be looking at closing at around 2:30 - 3 o'clock. Obviously none of us know what the weather will do, and these limitations may change as facts become clearer. However at this moment we have to make a decision based on what we are being warned about. I'm sure all our loyal customers will understand and we look forward to welcoming you after the weekend.

So, this is me. My name is Dom, and regular customers to Leoni will recognise me from being mainly behind the coffee machine in the shop. I've worked there for 10 years, initially only coming in short term to cover a staff members maternity leave. Exactly one year ago I bought the company, including the coffee shop from the ever present founder and owner for the previous 25 years, Simon. It seems fitting on the anniversary of the takeover to 'fill in' the customers of our story. When I took over a year ago, we kept it very much 'under the radar' we didn't publicise it or make a grand gesture, we wanted to keep the idea of 'business as usual'. We openly told customers who asked and I was very keen to keep the image and the standards that had made Leoni so successful for a quarter of a century. Obviously the news filtered down over the past 12 months, and I think most customers now know. For a business to keep being successful, and keep moving forward, change and evolution is inevitable. I have slowly made subtle changes to 'put my stamp' on the business, and I think these have been welcomed and appreciated by the clientele. I hope these little changes have been viewed as an enhancement to what was an already popular and well supported business within the town. Any business is nothing without a good workforce behind it. We have unfortunately lost some wonderful and amazing staff over the year, but we have also recruited equally great staff to keep the business moving forward. I can't say the past year has been easy..... I've got a lot more grey hairs than this time last year, but every challenge has been overcome and the business continues to be a success. New logo, new label, new packaging...... But still the same great coffee inside. This is our Leoni 'competition blend number 5'. It's the blend that we use every day to make every espresso based coffee in the coffee shop..... It was developed over 20 years ago...... Blended and roasted for use in the UK and world barista championships. It is based on the espresso style from Northern Italy. In this style the beans are roasted to a deep mahogany brown, but no coffee oils are present on the surface of the beans. This style develops the most caramelized sugars within the beans then quickly halts the roast before the nutty bite of over roasting overwhelms the natural sweetness. Beans must be carefully selected to be low in acidity for this style to be a success. The coffee flavour is balanced so that no single element dominates the cup. We always have, and continue to sell our own blend espresso to our customers as either beans or ground. We can also supply to the trade in kilo bags. Something I've been working on for a while. We will be starting our own barista school shortly. These will be a range of courses suitable for everyone from the home enthusiast up to individuals already in the industry looking to improve their skills, knowledge and understanding. We will look at...... - The history of coffee, the types and characteristics of different beans. - The roasting process - Calibrating the grinder, and understanding the effect the grind has on your coffee - How to pull a 'perfect shot'..... Dosing, extraction times, temperature and pressure - Steaming milk, texturing, temperature, microfoam, latte pour and 'latte art' We intend to run courses either on a 1 to 1, or 2 to 1 basis to keep it small and really hands on. We can also come to your restaurant, or coffee shop for full team training if required. We are pleased to be hosting a poetry evening with local poet and musician Howard Griffiths. Howard's poems are edgy, topical, funny and thought provoking. Some are jolly and accompanied with his guitar, some are sombre and moody. However, this will be a very laid back, casual and experimental event. We will be holding it upstairs, so obviously numbers will be limited. It is a completely non profit making event. It is all about the art. Although we are suggesting a voluntary £2 donation towards costs.
